Unconquerable No More: The Reasons The Indian Red-Ball Cricket Reputation Is in Tatters

India's wicketkeeper-batsman heads to the pavilion post his exit in the second India-South Africa Test

The Indian cricket team's shocking 0-2 loss to the Proteas in the recently concluded Test series has left the team reeling.

Earlier this week, South Africa gave India their heaviest defeat in terms of runs, defying expectations. It was South Africa's maiden series victory in the subcontinent in two and a half decades and the host nation's another home failure in just a year after a decade-plus without a home loss.

The positive trajectory gained during the previous half-year has all but vanished and the futures of several players - along with team coach the coach - now hang in the balance.

Early Optimism Fades Quickly

The young team's impressive performance in the UK this season, under a different skipper, suggested a successful handover following the close together exits of key players Ashwin, Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

An easy 2-0 win over West Indies at the start of the home campaign enhanced that perception, before the South Africans came and inflicted a fell blow.

India were a bit unlucky that skipper Gill got injured quickly in the opening Test and took no further part in the series. However, that does not excuse or justify the side of the terribly sub-par showing in both Tests against the opposition.

Several established players took a hit, and several players eyeing long red-ball careers were exposed as not up to the mark - technically or mentally - for the Test cricket.

Concerning History

It was the second whitewash on home soil suffered by India in just over a year. In 2024, unfancied the Kiwis had pulled off a surprising 3-0 victory which essentially denied India a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The latest loss to South Africa could damage India's hopes of qualifying for the decider of this cycle too.

From number three in the Test championship standings before the series, the side have been relegated to the fifth spot. Even though nine more Tests are yet to be played, half of these are against Australia. Typically, competing on home turf would be a significant benefit - including against the mighty Aussies. Yet the failures against the Kiwis and the Proteas leave little scope for that confidence.

Causes of the Fall

The national team's weakness in the longer format has been significantly highlighted. However, why India have fared so badly in Tests at home lately is continues to confuse.

In the 21st century, India were considered impregnable in Test cricket in home conditions. In hot, humid conditions and on surfaces that assisted spinners and aided their squad, India brooked no opposition. A rare failure, like in the 2012-13 season against England, was considered an anomaly.

Today, the team seem easy pickings in their own backyard.

Against the Kiwis in 2024 and the Proteas currently, India were hoisted by their own petard. The pitches they developed to suit their strengths backfired spectacularly, as the opposition capitalized on them more skillfully, outplaying the Indian batters and bowlers when it mattered most.

What Happened?

A few experts argue that the Indian team is struggling in home conditions because home surfaces have been modified from turners to pace-friendly pitches to get cricketers ready to succeed overseas.

A few mention that the domestic T20 league, in which many overseas players participate, has removed the mystery and hardship subcontinental pitches would present to them in the past.

While there is some truth in both analyses, it fails to account for the reason India's performances at home have seen such a sharp fall.

Several Weaknesses

Many past stars identify a complex, multi-headed problem, not limited to one or two factors.

Experts and participants have pointed to multiple deficiencies post the team's disappointing performance to the South Africans: underestimating the opposition, poor preparation, questionable picks, excessive self-belief, frequent changes of the starting eleven, and favoring white-ball over the longer format.

This was obvious in the showings of the squad.

Players like Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom high hopes were held, suffered for their nonchalance, while Sai Sudarshan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Jurel - who were looking to cement their place in the team - came up short in technique and temperament, suffering the consequences for their casual attitude.

A small number - Jadeja, Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Sundar - fulfilled their skill and fame - but not sufficiently to secure victories.

Leadership Under Fire

The post-mortem didn't spare not only the cricketers - selectors and coaching staff were also criticized, driven by disappointed supporters and vocal past stars. In the spotlight of the scrutiny was mentor Gautam Gambhir.
